
Identifying “legal high” plant species

Kratom, opium poppy, datura, wormwood, and morning glory. Five plant species with a history of recreational misuse, and five species a forensic chemistry lab in Maryland set out to identify by DNA rather than by appearance alone.
Researchers at Towson University evaluated the PDQeX phytoGEM system against a competing plant DNA extraction kit, processing pulverised plant material from each species to obtain PCR-ready DNA suitable for species identification.
Plant material is a genuinely difficult extraction target. Cell walls, secondary metabolites, and resins all interfere with conventional methods, which is part of why visual identification still dominates casework involving plant evidence, even though visual identification has obvious limits when material is processed, dried, or fragmentary.
DNA-based species identification offers a more defensible answer where visual identification alone would leave room for doubt.
The DNA amplicons phytoGEM produced from these five species generated melt curves matching the established reference extraction method exactly. A general-purpose plant DNA kit can be made to work on forensic material. phytoGEM was built with it in mind from the start.
